Cardwell to Cairns

Cardwell

Once we left Magnetic Island, we went up the road to the small town of Cardwell. We didn't do much, mainly washing. We did go to a small waterfall nearby called Murray Falls. we also went for forest drive, but half the forest had been chopped down. Kate also found out that she had won $100 for an article she wrote for one of the backpacker mags, which she is pretty chuffed about!

Mission Beach

After leaving Cardwell, it was short drive up to Mission Beach. We stayed at a YHA which had camping space. It was called the Treehouse and basically it was a big wooden house on stilts. Mission Beach is an area where the southern cassowary lives. Its a relative of the emu, but is endangered. Its also a very large bird which could kill a human, so in all the things you hear about it, the main one is don't run away from one as it will chase you and probably attack you. Luckily (or is it unluckily) for us one decided to visit where we were staying.

Cairns

After leaving Mission Beach we stopped off at Murdering Point Winery for a bit of wine tasting and we bought some tropical plum wine. The name comes from when some explorers we murdered and eaten by some Aborigines years ago. We read the macabre story when we arrived at the winery. It was then a couple of hours to Cairns and the campsite at Crystal Cascades.

On the first day in Cairns we did a trip to the outer reef. We did another scuba dive which was very different to our first dive. After going through a few safety skills, we descended about 10m and swim around just under supervision instead of having to hold on all the time. It was a lot better this time although Kate had a little panic when her mask filled up with water and she couldn't get it out. Eventually she figured it out and we carried on. (Kate comment: The instructor was excellent and kept me calm and Jamie was very sweet as well holding my hand as we swam and checking if I was ok). We saw some clown fish (Nemo fish) as well as hundreds of other fish. We also saw a turtle while snorkeling.

The Great Barrier Reef.
On the second day I was going to go kayaking with some raft guides I met but they all bailed on me so I wasn't very happy as I had hired all the equipment.

On our last night in Cairns, we went for a meal at the Green Ant Cantina. We only paid $5 each for a Mexican meal, total bargain and v tasty.
